Book: Scat

Hiaasen, C. (2009). Scat. New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf.

Genre: Mystery

Reading/Interest Level: Ages 9-12

Similar Titles: Hoot

Plot: Nick and Marta don't believe in the excuses the headmaster of their school is giving them – how could a teacher disappear from a fieldtrip? Yes, Mrs. Starch wasn't liked very much, and there was that suspicious fire to contend with. Add to the mix some illegal oil drilling, a possible endangered species, and a class delinquent named Smoke and you have got yourself a mystery adventure like no other. There's a lot going in the little corner of the Everglades and Nick and Marta want to uncover the truth.

Personal Thoughts: This book would be good for tweens who need an easy read, or who may have trouble reading. The author used full names of the characters a lot, which did get to be a little annoying. Otherwise, the book was a good adventure with a lesson about destroying the environment.
